Highways act 1980 ignored

Reported via mobile in the Obstruction (Not Vegetation) category anonymously at 07:41, Sunday 3 May 2026

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9391016.

Resident on St Ronans Drive has built gates at end of rear garden opening out into neighbouring street across pavement and grass area. Contravenes highways act 1980.

Yes, driveway gates can open outwards in the UK, but they must not swing over public land, such as pavements, footpaths, or roads. Under the Highways Act 1980, gates opening onto a highway require special permission, and infringing this can lead to fines, as they cannot create a hazard for pedestrians or vehicles.
