Fly posting Advert

Reported via desktop in the Missing or damaged signpost category anonymously at 11:54, Monday 2 March 2026

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9028055.

Highways Department Northumbria County Council CC to The right honourable Joe Morris MP

Dear Madam /Sir, A local Estate Agent “Pennine Ways” has fixed a large advertising board on the official signpost signing the Pennine Way. This has been in place now for two years.

Your department has been told about this on several occasions by a Slaggyford resident but no action has been taken. This reminds me of similar inactivity by your department several years ago when the South Tyne Railway effectively poached 8ft from the verge of the lane from Slaggyford green to Far House making two way traffic near impossible. For this infringement several Slaggyford residents informed you but were palmed off stating that legal documents needed to be checked. No action was ever taken.

This fly posting is clearly at odds with your policy outlined in 8.3 of Appendix A applying for Brown and white Highway signs

“Signs which have been erected by businesses, either for advertising or directional purposes, which have not received the appropriate statutory planning and/or highways approvals, shall be removed by the County Council providing that the council give 28 days notice of the intention to remove the sign to the applicant. Any incurred removal costs will be recovered from the business/attraction in question”.

This blatent disregard for planning and I presume Highways approval is an eyesore and one of the first things visitors to this ANOB site see when walking or driving into the village. It is also grossly unfair to other local Estate agents who would no doubt welcome the chance of free advertising on an official signpost. (See attached photos).

I hope that this will not be treated like the South Tyne railway infringement and just swept under the carpet.

Yours faithfully
