Existing grit bin on Quarry Edge is too far from our house when road is icy
Reported via desktop in the New Grit Bin request category by Elizabeth Charles at 18:53, Sunday 4 January 2026
Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8625370.
When we had the cold snap before Christmas it was too difficult to get to the existing grit bin, which is find for the top end of the road. There is room for another at the bottom of the road by the wall that has the wood behind it. We have recently moved into number 6 at this end of the road.
The criteria for installing a new grit bin are points-based and take into account several factors, including the severity of slopes and bends, traffic category, whether the highway is on a Primary 1 gritting route, the presence of an existing grit bin within a 200-metre radius, and pedestrian footfall. We will assess the need for an additional bin and advise you of the outcome in due course.

The criteria for the installation of a new grit bin are points based and includes the severity of the slope and bends, the category of traffic, if the highway is on a Primary 1 gritting route if there is already a grit bin within 200m radius and the footfall. Our Highway Inspector for the area has been to assess the need for a new grit bin and unfortunately the area does not meet the criteria due to Grit Bin No 1153 being within a 200m radius of the location. The local town or parish council can purchase a grit bin from Northumberland County Council to be placed in a location that does not meet the winter service criteria but is viewed by them as a requirement and is in a location that can be safely accessed by Highways crews for refilling and does not obstruct the public footpath. These grit bins will usually be green. This report has now been closed. Thank You
