Road is like an ice rink

Reported via mobile in the New Grit Bin request category anonymously at 13:17, Sunday 4 January 2026

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8623834.

Every time it snows or gets icy the whole of starlight crescent turns into an ice rink. The tight bends round the roundabout makes it dangerous and the cars parked on the road increases the risk of someone being crashed into. As the area is sheltered from all directions from the houses, it takes longer for the ice to melt and puts the street more at risk of ice as the cold air is trapped in. We would appreciate a grit bin so we are able to grit the road to make it safe for us and those visiting.

  • Does not meet criteria for a grit bin

    State changed to: Fixed

Posted by Northumberland County Council at 12:48, Monday 12 January 2026

  • Update - The criteria for the installation of a new grit bin are points based and include the severity of slopes and bends, the category of traffic using the road, whether the highway is on a Primary 1 gritting route for roads or footways, the presence of an existing grit bin within a 200-metre radius, and footway footfall.
Our Highway Inspector has inspected and assessed the location and, unfortunately, it does not meet Northumberland County Council criteria for the installation of a new grit bin.
However, the local town or parish council may purchase a grit bin from Northumberland County Council for installation at a location that does not meet the winter service criteria but is considered necessary by the town or parish council. Any such location must be safely accessible for Highway crews to refill and must not obstruct the public footpath. These grit bins are usually green.
