Nearest grit bin is too far for safe gritting of at georges road
Reported via mobile in the New Grit Bin request category anonymously at 20:08, Friday 2 January 2026
Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8618290.
St George’s road faces north and in winter when icy conditions does not get gritted by anyone, and due to northern aspect and shaded aspect the ice outlasts neighbouring roads where the sun does melt it. We have many elderly and young families that require safe roads and the speed limit is still 30mph (and many do not drive much slower than this along the road)
The criteria for the installation of a new grit bin are points based and includes the severity of the slope and bends, the category of traffic, if the highway is on a Primary 1 gritting route if there is already a grit bin within 200m radius and the footfall. Our Highway Inspector for the area will assess the need for a new grit bin in the location.

The criteria for the installation of a new grit bin are points based and includes the severity of the slope and bends, the category of traffic, if the highway is on a Primary 1 gritting route if there is already a grit bin within 200m radius and the footfall. Our Highway Inspector for the area has been to assess the need for a new grit bin and unfortunately the area does not meet the criteria. The local town or parish council can purchase a grit bin from Northumberland County Council to be placed in a location that does not meet the winter service criteria but is viewed by them as a requirement and is in a location that can be safely accessed by Highways crews for refilling and does not obstruct the public footpath. These grit bins will usually be green. This report has now been closed. Thank You
