Aggressive dogs and confrontational landowner

Reported via desktop in the Nuisance/Dangerous Animal category anonymously at 22:56, Tue 30 December 2025

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8608178.

On the afternoon of 30/12/25 I was walking along the byway between Whittingham Lane and Thrunton Wood. There is a house at the Whittingham Lane end, next to the gate where the byway enters a field. This is on one of my regular walking routes and on most occasions that I am here there are a number of dogs running loose in the grounds of the house, who act aggressively when I pass; running up to the fence and barking. Although a little intimidating, they have remained behind the fence. However, today as I was passing through the gate into the field, one of the dogs jumped over the fence from the house into the field and came aggressively towards me. I was able to get back through the gate and close it behind me before the dog could make contact. After a few minutes a man came out of the house to investigate the noise. I requested that he call his dog back so that I could make my way through the field. He became very confrontational - telling me to "stop whinging", how "there's nothing worse than the public" and the touble he has with "all the vermin who keep walking past his house". He told me the dogs would not hurt me, but I made it clear that from their behaviour I could not have assumed that but he just dismissed me as being an annoyance. Eventually he took the dog back into his property, but I now feel unsafe and intimidated to continue using this route.
