Gritter out when it is so mild

I drove onto the A69 from the A68 travelling towards Newcastle at 10:10 today and drove behind a Grit wagon. The wagon was actually gritting the road and this continued for the minutes I overtook the wagon. Why was it gritting when the temperature was around 15’ C?

I've also had another I'd put through to highways.
