Slick patch of paving slabs

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7631892.

There is an area of paving slabs on Castlegate all around the Jubilee Fountain that has become very slick with even the smallest amount of rain. The area covered is quite small - from the benches to the road railings and down to the little walkway under Castle Gate bridge viewing point. On crutches, and in the last month my crutches have just slid out from under me causing much pain to my injured foot. I have no idea why that is the only patch of pavement that is dangerous but it is an area where a lot of people sit and eat fish and chips.

  • This patch of paving slabs around the monument is very slippery, slick and dangerous to anyone using walking aids - but only when wet. It is the main area people sit and eat fish and chips from a nearby shop so the fat from their food and the oily waste going in the nearby council bin seems to have coated the area with grease. I have fallen there at least 4 times when my crutch just lost all grip. Be warned - if it has rained or just been cleaned, do NOT walk on it with crutches or slippery footwear.

  • This is not NCC it is Berwick Town Council who power washed the area on 30/06/25

  • The patch of pavement I reported is still as slippery when wet as it was before. My crutches still slip on the slabs - 2 falls in the last month - and it's now at the point where I see it has been raining I have to change my whole route to avoid them. If you powerwash them again it needs to be something that removes grease in the tank.

  • The area I reported is still as greasy and slippery as it was. As I am still on crutches it scares me to hobble across that patch of paving stones.

  • No improvement. Crutches still keep slipping. Some sort of rubber coating is necessary.
