Cherry Tree felled

Reported via desktop in the Trees under a Preservation Order or in a Conservation Area category anonymously at 15:13, Fri 23 May 2025

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7610341.

A mature Cherry Tree was felled on Tuesday/Wednesday, no Consultation was made to the PC or residents, we have no idea why the tree was felled as it looked healthy and was in full bloom, It wasn’t of the fruiting variety just a flowering one, all the residents questioned so far are very annoyed that such a lovely tree has been felled and are asking if this is another ‘Gap Sycamore’ or ‘Enfield Oak’! One would think with the publicity those have caused that more consultation/notification would have been attempted.

  • Said ‘don’t know’ as nothing has been done to rectify the event as yet, it has now been discovered (even though they initially denied all knowledge) that the council instructed the felling, stating it was dangerous! That’s 5 years after a branch came off during storm Arwen and 3 years since the las report on the tree and with no consultation with the local residents! It took persistent attempts by the locals to discover what had happened, even the PC (Parish Council) were kept in the dark. It should’ve been a simple exercise to trace the paperwork involved and give a quick explanation but no the council’s land ownership arm decided to lie about it! They may’ve come clean now but should now be keel hauled!

  • Bernicia have now admitted their contractor ’Special Branch' carried out the work, supposedly due to not being safe! They have promised to remove the stump and replace the tree in the Autumn, as a community we are very annoyed at not being consulted at any stage and keep on at them until the tree is replaced and a TPO is put on the other trees

  • Depends on what is meant by fixed! The tree is gone and hasn’t been replaced yet and no evidence that Bernice’s will given the fact they blatantly lied about knowing who did it, their contractor! On the plus side the ‘stump killer plugs’ inserted in the stump don’t seem too be working as the stump is sprouting new growth, looked after properly it may regrow, unlike the grass around it which is being cut to within an inch of it’s life considering the hot dry weather! The contractor needs to raise the cut while it is hot!

  • Not fixed yet as far as replacing the tree is concerned but we now know the Housing authority took it down with no consultation with the residence after deeming it was unsafe, a survey had been carried out 3 years ago and there had been no change to the tree in that time but they do what they want to and there is no stopping them

The tree was starting to re-grow but the grass cutters strimmed all the new growth off, doesn’t bode well for when they plant a new sapling, how long will it last, if it gets planted at all, it’s November now and one would expect the stump to have been dug out and the ground prepared while the ground is soft and easy to access!

  • They've been and pruned two trees that were causing damage but not replaced the tree they felled, we thought they’d at least remove the stump in readiness! All residents are disgruntled about this to same the least!

  • Considering it’s winter one would expect the stump would have been removed in preparation to making the ground ready for planting a new sapling in the spring, But nothing yet, it makes one think that they are ignoring it in the hope we’ll forget and they won’t need to replace it!

  • The stump has now been removed and a new tree planted. Looks to be a cherry and we’re told it is we can only wait and see as there’s no species label on it, hopefully some of us are still around to see it in all its glory as we’re all getting older!

    State changed to: Fixed
