Cracks in pavement of Dogger Bank/Bullers Green stepway widening towards garden wall

Reported via desktop in the Trees affecting highways or pavements category anonymously at 18:16, Friday 12 July 2024

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6223636.

Over some years cracks leading across the stepped pavement alongside Dogger Bank shrubbery (reported often) have widened and reached our garden wall (ultimately a danger to the public footpath). The flat surface at the start of one of the central shallow steps now dips in front of the lower crack. The cause seems root-growth of the large yew tree that has grown massively with no proper trimming for the 60+ years our family has lived nearby. The tree is now too large for the soil base; its branches can overhang on to the telephone wires, affect headroom on the stepped pavement and can touch high vehicles on the parallel roadway. Radical trimming or pollarding now seems due; County must own this green space as it annually trims the shrubs.
