Highways retaining wall collapse onto path at 16 Reid Street Morpeth NE61 1TY and damage to yard walls

Reported via desktop in the Damage to Structure category anonymously at 16:10, Tue 10 October 2023

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5082758.

On 9th October 2023 the highways retaining wall/structure collapsed sometime between 8.30am and 1.30pm. The lamp post no. 378M is now positioned very close to the edge - see photos. There is significant debris of stone and concrete slabs in the pathway. The rear yard walls of my house to the east and north have been damaged also and left in a precarious state overhanging the path regularly used by allotment owners, dogwalkers and children. I reported this to the Town Council who suggested I call the police and the ref number given is NP-20231009-0567. There is ongoing work with Northumbria Water and their contractors at no.5 Lancaster Terrace so the road is blocked and their have been no residents cars in the vicinity of the damaged structure since 7am on the 9th October.

  • Can I please have an update on when this will be fixed, including to my yard walls. Thank you.

  • There are now more large stones falling from the broken stone wall and lying on the path. they're too large for me to move to the side and I'm concerned they may go missing which will impact on the wall being rebuilt. I am also concerned at the time taken for my yard walls to be rebuilt. This is now more than 3 months without any progress. Please let me know what plans are in place to fix this and when they will be happening.

  • Again I am writing for an update on what is happening with the repair/rebuilding of the stone wall and, importantly for me, my yard wall which was also damaged by the impact. The bricks were taken was take away by the council pending repairs. Please respond to my requests for information, the original problem was 10th October 2023, I have not had any information since 11th October.

  • I rang the highways department at 13.46 on 12th March 2024 for an update. This didn’t materialise and so I have rung back just now 10.38 on 21st March 2024 and repeated the information from the 12th March. Again I have been informed that this will be chased up and I will be updated. The stonework on the broken wall continues to degrade.

  • Dave Moat phone call. Wall to be repaired in April

Posted anonymously at 11:20, Thursday 21 March 2024

  • There has been no progress on the wall, it remains broken and my yard wall is missing. During my last phone call with NCC I was assured that the wall would be repaired in April. The last day in April is tomorrow. Please confirm when this will be repaired. It is now 6 months since the wall was damaged.
