Pedestrian Crossing - Safety

Reported via desktop in the Request Timing Review category anonymously at 17:10, Fri 8 September 2023

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4973696.

Hello, firstly the lights were off for quite some time, then they were fixed in May and then fully removed. Could I kindly ask, when will the lights be placed back there? This is adjacent to a school where a lot of young children cross along with children from School year groups 5 & 6 who go to/from school on their own. They have deliveries turning up at core hours (between 08:30-09:00 and 15:15-16:00) When it's the busiest period for School. How there has yet been no accident is beyond me.

Could I kindly ask if traffic lights can be installed, even if it's further along the road, maybe adjacent to Victoria Mews, this would make the road safe crossing. Otherwise, you would have to walk towards Broadway Circle, use the limited crossing there which is possibly more dangerous because

I appreciate the new school being built, however I don't believe Newcastle Council have taking in to considering the school and environment already in place and the safety of children already there. There's no Crossing person in place around this area therefore the traffic lights that were in place were the next best thing.

Could this please kindly be reviewed/temporary measures be put in place?

Updates

  • Apologies, within my correspondence I state Newcastle council, rather than Northumberland Council.

  • 20 days and still no acknowledgements from Northumberland Council regarding this level crossing. A crossing which is used by a lot of parents and children who go to school themselves. Attached is an image of the carnage with cars even mountain pavements because deliveries being made within the peak time of school travelling.

Surely as NCC, you have a welfare of safe crossings around our schools. Yet, with this crossing being right opposite St Wilfreds Primary school, you've not done anything to ensure a replacement crossing is in place. Not sure why it's so complicated/difficult to add temporary crossing lights further down the road for instance, near Victoria Mews.
