Conflicting speed limit signs

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4880713.

Last week you have installed new signs and road markings around the area of Beaufront school.

Very conflicting speed limit signs - coming up the hill from Oakwood they go from 30 mph, to 40 mph, then to 20 mph - all in a few hundred yards!!

Then right outside our house you have a pole with '40' on it just yards from the school, and where there is a really tight bend in the road - this is very dangerous! You would be lucky to get through there at 10 or 20 mph!! (Unless you were used to riding at the Isle of Man TT.

Please can you reconsider and send someone to look at this ludicrous signage ASAP.

    The new speed limit past the school is 40mph, which is why there legally has to be 40mph repeater signs in place to enforce this new limit. These also have to be at set distances, hence these locations. The 20mph signs are advisory and only in effect at school pick up/drop off times when the lights flash.

    Just to explain why a lower speed limit was not introduced. 30mph speed limits can only be provided in built-up areas. There has to be a minimum of 20 properties and the developed frontage should be 600 metres long. This is not the case here so a 30mph speed limit is not possible. Similarly, it did not meet the criteria for a permanent 20mph limit, which is why an advisory one was implemented.

    I will also add that speed limit signs do not infer that it is okay to travel up to the limit indicated and drivers are still responsible for driving according to the road conditions, regardless of the posted speed limit. As we have seen from the data supplied by our speed compliance tool, motorists were already doing this.
